Our highlight of the year

Microscopic analysis

Since mid-2020, Neu Kaliss Spezialpapier has been using its own digital microscope with electronic analysis to help it process more efficiently the growing number of orders it is receiving for new product developments. The new acquisition enables the company to quickly analyze and assess the development progress of product innovations with the aid of detailed images. In addition, it means the company can now carry out various quality assessments and incoming goods inspections in its own laboratory.

Microscopic analysis is particularly useful when testing new fibers or nonwovens on the laboratory paper machine. The new device not only generates sharp images and records them using a camera system, but also measures fiber lengths and pores, compares third-party samples, and generates the corresponding reports. These enable purchasing and sales staff to view and evaluate the use of innovative materials from an additional and very specific perspective. For staff in the production and conversion departments, the images and analyses are often critical for the decision-making process.

Last but not least, the microscope can also be used for processing complaints. This not only saves time, but also the cost of commissioning external laboratories to prepare and evaluate detailed images.

Our positioning

In the nonwoven wallpaper market, Neu Kaliss / Neukölln Spezialpapier is one of the world’s top five manufacturers. It supplies both the mass market and premium segments. The products manufactured and processed by Neu Kaliss / Neukölln Spezialpapier are often bespoke – and in some cases exclusive – high-quality goods using the latest technologies.

Our strategy

In order to reduce its dependence on the wallpaper industry, Neu Kaliss / Neukölln Spezialpapier has been pursuing a diversification strategy since 2018. This involves, among other things, developing and marketing nonwoven materials for new application fields. The aim is to establish the company as a supplier of specialty nonwovens in various industries, such as food production, household cleaning, and the automotive sector. Nevertheless, the wallpaper industry will remain an important part of the company’s strategic alignment in the future. In this sector, growth potential is seen above all in the premium, digital printing, and construction segments.

Market and business trends in 2020

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Neu Kaliss / Neukölln Spezialpapier was unable to meet the targets it set itself for 2020. On the one hand, the international wallpaper trade was hampered by the pandemic, and on the other hand, the shutdown of DIY stores imposed by the German government negatively impacted the domestic market. Moreover, new business initiatives suffered as the order situation of potential new customers deteriorated and the cancellation of major trade shows made it more difficult to acquire new leads. Nevertheless, progress was made in all strategically important projects.

Outlook 2021

Neu Kaliss / Neukölln Spezialpapier expects a further challenging year in 2021, even though international markets have now adjusted to the new framework conditions in the core segment of nonwoven wallpapers. In Germany, higher demand is expected as a result of increased remodeling and renovation measures. The new business initiatives developed by the company will already contribute to sales in the course of the year, following certification by customers in the first quarter. Following the cancellations of the past year, there are now also plans to participate in important trade shows as of the fall of 2021 in order to acquire new customers.
