IN TANZANIA

Together with the development aid organization Plan International, Melitta launched the project “Coffee Power: Empowering Women and Young People for Economic Opportunities and Resilience” in 2023. The innovation project is being implemented in ten communities in the northwest of Tanzania, in the Tarime district.

The project’s main target group are smallholder coffee growers, who are given the opportunity to learn about sustainable farming methods. In addition, young people – especially young women – will receive various forms of support. By providing training opportunities, the project aims to alleviate the country’s high unemployment rate among young people and facilitate their integration into the local labor market. And by breaking down gender norms, the project also helps to empower women along the coffee value chain.

The project starts in 2024 and will run for 27 months. Plan International holds the copyright to all images shown.

FUTURE-COMPLIANT NEW SOFTWARE FOR PAPER PRODUCTION

Faster, safer, more sustainable: the new process control system for the 70-meter-long paper machine at Melitta Europe – Coffee Preparation Division in Minden ensures outstanding quality and the future-compliant production of filter paper. Melitta experts and external service providers spent several months in 2023 implementing and testing the machine’s new “brain”. The multi-million-euro investment, which also includes new operating and programming stations in the adjacent control rooms, represents an important milestone in the company’s efforts to continuously enhance the already above-average performance and sustainability of its paper machine.

100% RECYCLATE

With its Honest 100 strategy, Cofresco has set itself an ambitious target: all its products are to be fully integrated into the materials cycle in the future. This means that the complete Cofresco product range will be made exclusively from recycled or renewable materials and will be fully recyclable or compostable after use.

This target was already achieved for bin liners marketed under the Swirl® and Handy Bag® brands in 2023. They are now made from 100 percent recycled plastic – without any compromise in terms of tear resistance, impermeability, or functionality. Some of the recycled plastic used for the bin liners comes from the Melitta initiative “Fair Recycled Plastic”, which collects plastic waste in Bangalore as part of a social business project and processes it into recycled plastic (recyclate).

ONLINE SHOP RELAUNCHUX AT ITS BEST

A new shopping experience: at www.melitta.de, consumers can now buy coffee, fully automatic coffee machines, filter coffeemakers, and accessories directly from Melitta even more easily and conveniently. The new online shop not only features a new, appealing, and modern design, but also improved performance, optimized navigation, and new self-service functions. Users can also find more detailed product descriptions on the new website to help them make the right purchase decision. The relaunch of the German website marks the start of a program to revamp all online stores of the operating division Melitta Europe – Sales Europe Division.

ACW-Film

FILM PRODUCTIONFAST, PRECISE, SUSTAINABLE

With a new roll cutter and innovative compactor, ACW-Film is now even better equipped to meet the high expectations of its customers – while also producing more sustainably. The new roll cutter slices film to meet specific customer requirements with extreme precision and in record time. The compactor, which was also installed in 2023, ensures that the scraps of film from the cutting process are collected directly and pressed into a compact bale – thus minimizing static electricity, noise, and dust. ACW-Film is one of the first companies to use this pioneering technology, making its production processes even more sustainable.

NEXT-LEVEL TELEPHONYGLOBAL NETWORK

Who needs which type of telephony? This was the question at the center of the “Global Unified Communications” project initiated by the Melitta Business Service Center in 2023. After all, the requirements for modern telephony are highly diverse – whether in the office, on the road, or at home, and whether for administration, production, or call centers – and yet the goal is to fulfill them all.

Melitta is therefore investing in cutting-edge technology and launching a new cloud-based telephony infrastructure based on Microsoft Teams across the globe. The pilot phase was successfully completed in 2023, and the project will be rolled out starting in 2024.

REBUILDING CORAL REEFSSECURING BIODIVERSITY

Coral reefs perform a similar function in the ocean as rainforests do on land and are home to a third of all marine life. rrreefs, a spin-off of ETH Zurich, has therefore taken on the task of rebuilding coral reefs around the world and thus restoring a rich marine fauna. The Melitta Group has been sponsoring the project since 2023.

By creating calm waters for mangroves and sea grasses, the reefs also help to sequester CO2 and protect the coastline from erosion. The project’s activities are continuously monitored by experts and based on the latest scientific findings.

MILK ALTERNATIVES

Variety at the push of a button: the new Melitta® Cafina® CT8plus fully automatic coffee machine can be filled with four different varieties of coffee bean and four types of milk – including milk alternatives – and thus caters to a wide range of individual preferences. The top model of the CT range allows hospitality professionals to make their drinks menu even more attractive, for example with additional coffee blends, seasonal offerings, specialty coffees or decaffeinated coffee-based beverages made from freshly ground beans.

Demand for different kinds of milk and milk alternatives has increased sharply in recent years. This is why the CT8plus is equipped with two separate milk systems that allow the use of several milk varieties or plant-based alternatives. And with the extra feature of an alternative brewing method, the CT8plus can even delight lovers of filter coffee.

CO-CREATION MELITTA AND THE RED DEVILS IN CHINA

Melitta Asia Pacific has attracted a lot of attention on the Chinese coffee market with its “Melitta x Manchester United Glory Blend Drip Coffee”. The new coffee aims to raise awareness of Melitta’s recently launched drip coffee segment and sharpen the brand’s profile in China. With 350 million fans, Manchester United is hugely popular among the Chinese.

The special edition was developed in close collaboration between Melitta Asia Pacific, the sports partnerships team, and Manchester United. The product launch was promoted on both the Melitta and Manchester United channels. In addition, an event was held at the “Theatre of Dreams”, the Manchester United Museum in Beijing, to mark the launch of the product.

BIOMASS70% LESS CO2
AT CELUPA

Biomass instead of natural gas: following intensive preparations, Melitta South America replaced the natural gas boiler for the paper machine of its Celupa plant (Brazil) with a biomass boiler in 2023. This is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 70 percent. The operating division has thus reached an important milestone of its climate targets: the Celupa plant is to be climate-neutral by 2025.

The Worwo brand enjoys an excellent reputation in the East European vacuum cleaner bag market. And to make sure it stays that way and the brand continues to grow, Worwo gave it a fresh look in 2023. The newly designed packaging now clearly and easily explains what makes each product special and where it comes from. The new brand identity was developed jointly by a team of experts from Wolf PVG, Worwo, and the sales unit of Melitta Sales Europe (Melitta Polska).

NEXT GENERATION OF FAMILY BUSINESS HEALTH, FAMILY & JOB

With the aim of improving the health and work-life balance of its employees, the Melitta Group launched a number of campaigns and communication measures in 2023 to raise awareness of the importance of good health and the options available for balancing work, family, and private life. The activities included Breast Cancer and Bowel Health Awareness Days as well as new courses in the field of sport, assertiveness, and massage. One new feature is the creation of a dedicated position for work-life balance measures and advice – a further example of the company’s long-term investment in its employees. The new service reflects the company’s self-image as a family business in every sense and its desire to fully embrace this identity. After all, investing in family values also makes good business sense.

WORK CULTURE FIRST STEPS ON AN AI LEARNING JOURNEY

Melina is an accomplished all-rounder: always available, always in a good mood, and an expert in numerous fields. Her creative skills enable her to produce texts and images, research any information required, and answer questions on a wide variety of topics. Her secret? Melina is a virtual assistant and uses generative artificial intelligence.

Although Melina is already making office life easier for staff at Melitta, her real job is actually quite different. In cooperation with all operating divisions, the Digital Acceleration Team of the corporate division Innovation, Digitization and Start-ups is using her to explore the potential of artificial intelligence at Melitta. The aim is to find out what opportunities and risks the new technology offers and how it can be used to the greatest possible benefit for the Melitta Group.

AVOURY® TEACYCLE® CAPSMOLECULAR RECYCLING

The patented TeaCycle® Caps from Avoury® are made from 100% recycled plastic. This has been made possible by the molecular recycling method whereby used plastic is broken down into its molecular components – enabling it to achieve the same quality as new plastic.

After use, Avoury® TeaCycle® Caps can simply be placed in the recycling bin or returned to Avoury® free of charge. They are then forwarded for reprocessing and the plastic can be used again.

To help reduce plastic waste in the oceans, Avoury® has also teamed up with the social business plasticbank: as part of this partnership, at least the same amount of plastic waste is to be collected in coastal regions as has entered circulation since the launch of Avoury®.

It’s teatime! During the winter of 2023, shoppers in Hamburg’s popular “Rindermarkthalle” (a listed market hall complex) were invited to discover the world of Avoury®. The 20-square-meter pop-up store gave tea lovers the opportunity to learn about the Avoury One® tea machine, test its functionality, and sample over 30 outstanding premium tea varieties. The brand activation campaign was designed to provide a sensory product experience. Those impressed by the taste of Avoury® tea could either take an Avoury One® home with them right away or have the tea machine simply delivered to their home.

At the “Beyond Tassenrand” innovation roadshow in June 2023, employees were given the opportunity to learn about the latest Melitta Group products and projects. Innovative ideas and implementation examples from a wide range of areas within the Group were showcased at 18 information stands. The spectrum ranged from robotics and artificial intelligence to coffee and product innovations, sustainable solutions, and partnerships.
