Cuki Cofresco

TERRA MADRE
SALONE DEL GUSTO
FOOD AND
ENVIRONMENT

In 2022, Cuki Cofresco was the “Green Partner” of Terra Madre – Salone del Gusto. For a number of years now, the five-day event in Turin, Italy, has been advocating food as a valuable regeneration resource under the motto “Food RegenerAction”. Cuki Cofresco contributed to the success of the event with a wide range of activities: from practical tips on food storage, to the presentation of projects to combat food waste, to the provision of thousands of newly developed reusable plates for the various events. Several Cuki employees also actively participated in the workshops and discussion sessions on food and the environment.

Melitta Sales Europe

TURKEY RAPID GROWTH

The Melitta Group has been operating in Turkey since 2019 – and with great success: by the end of 2022, sales had grown by 90 percent, and are expected to double again by 2025. With its focus on fully automatic coffee machines and filter coffee machines, the Melitta Group now also has a highly visible presence in the Turkish retail sector.
This success is largely due to its collaboration with distributors as well as numerous strategic marketing initiatives aimed at raising brand awareness, including participation in the Istanbul Coffee Festival and coffee sponsoring at various social events.

Melitta Europe Coffee

SPECIALTY COFFEES CRAFTED WITH PASSION

The trend for specialty coffees continues unabated. These coffees are roasted with tremendous expertise, attention to detail, and craftsmanship at our small plant in Bremen: Melitta® Manufaktur. Demand for these coffees has soared – just one year after being launched on the market. And each coffee has its own unique character. Only the finest beans are used, which are often only available in small quantities. One thing they all have in common is a specialty score of over 80 points – making them true specialties. In fact, only about 5 percent of all coffees worldwide achieve a score of 80 or higher.

GO!SHAPE.
FUTURE.
TOGETHER.

What is our shared vision? What are the goals we set ourselves? And where do we want to be in ten years’ time? These are the questions being addressed by the GO! initiative of operating division Melitta Europe – Coffee Preparation. The aim is to foster a culture of togetherness, encourage communication between departments, and raise the level of innovation. Under the motto “Shape.Future.Together” the initiative also forms the basis for co-creating the operating division’s strategy – and thus ensuring sustainable success for the future.

Melitta Professional Coffee Solutions

COFFEE
LAB UNMANNED STORE

Since late 2022, coffee lovers have been able to enjoy freshly prepared coffee specialties in an unmanned coffee shop at Harms Markt in Bielefeld, Germany. “COFFEE LAB” guests can simply help themselves at one of the two Melitta® Cafina® XT7 fully automatic coffee machines and pay by card or smartphone. In addition to providing a wide range of milk-based coffee specialties, the “COFFEE LAB” is also used for product testing, for showcasing new developments, and for events or training sessions.

ACW-Film

N-VIRON-FLEX®

N-Viron-Flex® – a film developed by ACW-Film – is setting new standards. The composite film for the food sector has the same product properties as standard composite films, but is made using just one material type – making it easy to recycle. An external certification body has examined the recyclability of N-Viron-Flex® and awarded it a “Made for Recycling” certificate (test verdict: “very good”). One of ACW-Film’s main objectives is now to establish and intensify its partnerships in order to jointly drive the circular economy in the packaging industry.

Melitta South America

MELITTA
PLAN 2030 SUSTAINABILITY
ROADMAP

In 2022, Melitta South America made significant progress with the implementation of its Sustainability Strategy 2030: in its paper business, it commissioned the construction of a new biomass boiler that will reduce direct greenhouse gas emissions at its Celupa site by 70 percent. In its coffee business, the company continued its collaboration with suppliers to develop recyclable plastic packaging. In addition, over 100 employees were trained in key sustainability topics and sustainability workshops were held with over 30 major suppliers.

Melitta Professional Coffee Solutions

MELITTA®
ONSITE REMOTE
MONITORING

Everything under control: with the Melitta® ONSite app, users can easily view the current status of their coffee machines via their smartphone – and thus monitor the performance of their coffee machines, even across large areas or several floors. If bean or milk supplies are running low, users receive push notifications. This avoids downtime or waiting at the machine and thus helps optimize workflows.

Melitta North America

AWAY-FROM-HOME PERFECT FIT

Melitta North America has developed an innovative, flavored coffee for a major restaurant chain in the USA – a bespoke and exclusive solution. The brief: to create a unique flavored coffee that will boost hot coffee sales without compromising the chain’s successful iced coffee program. The new coffee had to be suitable for both the hot and iced variants.
Following a successful trial, the coffee developed exclusively for the restaurant chain was launched at over 590 outlets. For Melitta North America, this cooperation represents an outstanding milestone in the further penetration of the away-from-home segment.

Cofresco

FOOD FILMS 70% RECYCLING CONTENT

Progress in the freshkeeping segment: since the end of 2022, half of Cofresco’s products have already been made from waste or residual materials. The largest contribution was made by food films and bags with 70% recycled resources and bin liners made from 80% recycled plastic. This step represents a further milestone on the way to achieving the mission of Toppits® to have as many of its products as possible fully integrated into the materials cycle by 2025, and from then on to use only recycled and renewable materials in the manufacture of its product range.

Melitta Business Service Center

BEST PLACE
TO LEARN CAREER TURBO

The best conditions for a successful career: the Melitta Group’s facilities in Minden and Bremen have received the “Best Place to Learn” seal of quality for their vocational training concepts and programs. This prestigious, cross-industry certification is based on a 360-degree survey involving numerous trainers, training coordinators, apprentices, and former apprentices. The excellent support provided for young staff is also reflected in the results at the end of their training period: our apprentices and students achieve above-average grades in their final examinations.

Melitta Professional Coffee Solutions

LA TAZZA VERDE® SELECTION FAIR TRADE SPECIALTIES

Melitta Professional’s new La Tazza Verde® Selection range is aimed at coffee professionals looking to enhance their business with distinctive specialties. The single origin coffees of the Anei cooperative in Colombia are refined by Melitta® Manufaktur – which is specifically geared to such specialties and bespoke roasts. The espresso and café crème beans are ideally suited for use in fully- or semi-automatic coffee machines. For a particularly intense taste experience, a freshly brewed pour-over is recommended for the filter coffee. As you would expect from La Tazza Verde®, the beans of the new specialty range also have organic and Fairtrade certification.

Cuki Cofresco

HOT STUFF
PAPER PLATE GOODBYE PLASTIC

New generation: with its fully recyclable paper plates, Cuki Cofresco has developed an environmentally friendly alternative to disposable plastic plates. After all, the paper plates can be used to reheat food (up to 140° C) both in ovens and microwaves. As their coating is made from biodegradable plastic, they are fully compostable and can be recycled just as easily as paper. As such, they are fully in line with Cuki Cofresco’s “100% Circular Economy” strategy.

Melitta Group

CHATBOTS 24/7 DIALOG

The benefits are overwhelming: with the aid of chatbots, customers can receive immediate answers to their questions or retrieve information whenever they want – 24/7. For this reason, the Melitta Group has also opted to use these digital assistants. Chatbots are primarily deployed for campaigns and promotions at the point of sale, for example for cashback campaigns or competitions – thus making them a more entertaining experience.

Melitta Single Portions

AVOURY® BOUTIQUE TEA AT

Wolf PVG

ECOPOR®
FILTER
RESOURCE CONSERVATION

Wolf PVG has been doing everything it can to save every gram of CO2 from the production of its vacuum cleaner bags since 2014. The new generation of Swirl® vacuum cleaner bags with EcoPor® filters has the same goal: guarantee quality, increase sustainability. That means using as much recycled material as possible and as little virgin material as necessary.
The holding plates for the bags are made using 100 percent recycled plastic, and the pulp used in the filter layers is now 100 percent recycled paper. With a recycled material content of 45 to 60 percent, the EcoPor® 10 g bag reduces CO2 emissions while maintaining the same high filtration of 99.9 percent and is the only resource-efficient bag with this performance on the market. The new generation will gradually replace the Swirl® MicroPor® family. The aim is to completely eliminate oil-based plastics for Swirl® vacuum cleaner bags by 2030.

Melitta Group

HORIZON DIGITAL
COMMUNITY

Harmonized HR processes: the Melitta Group continues to drive its digital transformation with the HoRizon project and is introducing new software (“Workday”) worldwide that meets the highest standards. All HR processes that employees come into contact with while working for the Melitta Group are to be mapped via a modular platform – from recruitment and contract drafting, to induction and training, as well as salary management or the provision of references when staff leave the company. All operating divisions and several corporate divisions are involved in the HoRizon project, which is part of a change management process.

Melitta Sales Europe

LEAN & GREEN AWARD CO2 ACTION PLAN

Melitta Europe – Sales Europe – has received the Lean & Green Award for its action plan to reduce CO2 emissions. The concept, which was endorsed by TÜV Nord, aims to reduce logistics-related CO2 emissions by 20 percent by the end of 2024. The award is presented by GS1, a network of non-profit organizations committed to establishing global standards across industry and commerce for intercompany processes.

Melitta Group

FAIR
RECYCLED
PLASTIC
EMPOWERING
PEOPLE

The Melitta Group has expanded its business activities with the long-term and sustainable “Fair Recycled Plastic” initiative: together with Yunus Social Business Fund gGmbH, Cofresco has set up a recycling plant in Bangalore (India) that produces around 2,000 metric tons of plastic recyclate annually from plastic waste. The recycled materials are subsequently used to produce garbage bags under the Swirl® and handy bag® brands.
The social business enterprise sources the plastic waste from collection companies that provide better working conditions for their waste pickers. All profits flow back into the company or are invested in education and health care for local communities. As a result, it not only creates a better waste infrastructure in Bangalore but also generates additional income opportunities and better living conditions for the waste pickers – offering them a new perspective for the future.

Melitta Group

BACK TO
THE ROOTSVALUABLE COFFEE WASTE

How can waste be used to produce coffee? This question is currently being addressed by the “Back to the Roots” project, which the Melitta Group is conducting together with the Hanns R. Neumann Foundation in the Minas Gerais region of Brazil.
The project findings have been extremely encouraging so far: after suitable processing, the pulp of the coffee cherries and other organic waste that was previously discarded is proving to be a valuable compost that can significantly reduce the use of artificial fertilizers and at the same time both improve the quality of the soil and increase the resilience of the coffee plants.
Even before the project ends, it is already clear that the new waste management system offers multiple benefits: it reduces the environmental impact and raises the profitability of coffee growing, while also generating innovative business ideas and attractive jobs in the countries of origin.
